‘How deep is the ocean- How high is the sky’ Extension and Expansion
How do weroot ourselves deeply in the ground while simultaneously extending into the sky?
What happens in our bodies when we push and reach outward?
In this workshop, we will explore the qualities of extension—pushing and reaching—and how they differ, overlap, and complement each other. We will investigate how these qualities serve us as both bases and flyers in Contact Improvisation. By engaging with these principles, we unlock greater ease and efficiency in our movement, discover stability and clarity, and expand the possibilities for
flow and creativity in our dance.
Drawing inspiration from developmental movement principles (based on BMC), we will explore four foundational movement qualities: Yield, Push, Reach, and Pull. Through this investigation, we will explore how extension connects and integrates these stages into a cohesive movement practice.
The workshop blends individual exploration with shared work in pairs and groups. We will bridge somatic awareness with acrobatic dance, expanding our ability to integrate sensation and action, passive and active, and softness with strength. Throughout, we will deepen our understanding of the body as a source of valuable information, and discover how refining bodily awareness can enhance
both internal and interpersonal communication.
Together, we will explore how to maintain flow in the dance, whether we are "deep in the ocean or high in the sky." Through this process, we will create ‘the new’ and experience and express that which cannot be spoken.
